Local SEO Citation: The 40-Word Answer

A local SEO citation is any online mention of a business’s name, address and phone number (NAP) — on directories like Yelp, map apps like Apple Maps, social profiles, news sites or blogs. Google, Bing and AI assistants compare these mentions to confirm that the business is real, where it is and what it does.

Key takeaways

  • Citations are trust signals, not magic. In Whitespark’s 2026 survey of 47 local SEO experts, citation signals carry roughly 6% of local pack weight and 7% of local organic weight — but about 13% of AI search visibility.
  • Consistency beats volume. One correct listing on each important site outperforms hundreds of mismatched ones.
  • The core four come first: Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places and the leading directory in your country (Yelp in the US, Yell in the UK, Yellow Pages in Australia and Canada).
  • Unstructured citations are rising. “Best of” lists, local news and industry associations are three of the top five AI-visibility factors.
  • Most businesses need 30–80 well-chosen citations, not 500. Multi-location brands multiply that per location.
  • Citations take 2–12 weeks to go live and be recognized; the ranking effect is gradual and depends on everything else you do.
  • Cleanup often beats building. Old addresses, retired phone numbers and duplicates are the most common problems we find.

Who this guide is for

Owners and marketers of local businesses in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand; multi-location brands; and agencies looking for a white-label citation partner. If you only need the definition, the answer box above is enough. If you need to act, the 10-step process and country tables are below.

What Is a Local Citation in SEO? Definition, Anatomy & Examples

In local SEO, a citation is a reference to your business on a website or app you don’t own. The minimum is your business name; a full citation adds your street address and phone number. Most also carry your website, hours, categories, photos and reviews.

The term was popularized in 2008 by local search pioneer David Mihm, who argued that for local rankings a mention could matter as much as a link. That is still the key idea: a citation does not need a link to count. Search engines read the mention itself.

What does NAP stand for in local SEO?

NAP means Name, Address, Phone number — the three facts every citation should repeat identically. You will also see:

  • NAPW or NAP+W — NAP plus website URL.
  • UNAP — URL, Name, Address, Phone.
  • NAP+ — NAP plus the extended fields (hours, categories, description, photos).

Anatomy of a local citation

Field Required? Why it matters Common mistake
Business name Always The anchor every engine matches on Adding city or keywords that aren’t in your legal/trading name
Street address Storefronts; hidden for service-area businesses Places you on the map; drives proximity “Ste” on one site, “Suite” on another is fine — old addresses are not
Phone number Always Strong unique identifier Call-tracking numbers used as the main number
Website URL Recommended Connects the citation to your site http vs https, or linking a dead location page
Categories Recommended Relevance — what you do Different primary category on every site
Hours Recommended “Open now” filters; AI assistants quote them Holiday hours never updated
Description Recommended Context for AI summaries Copy-pasted keyword lists
Photos, logo Optional Clicks and trust Stock photos
Reviews Platform-driven Prominence and conversions Ignoring reviews on non-Google sites

Local citation examples

All three businesses below are fictional. The phone numbers use ranges reserved for fiction in each country.

US · structured citation

Lakeview Family Dental
1200 Barton Springs Rd, Suite 210
Austin, TX 78704
(512) 555-0147
lakeviewfamilydental.com

Listed on Yelp, Healthgrades and the Austin Chamber directory.

UK · structured citation

Harbour Lane Physio
14 Harbour Lane
Bristol BS1 4XY
0117 496 0123
harbourlanephysio.co.uk

Listed on Yell, Thomson Local and the NHS-style practitioner directory for its profession.

AU · unstructured citation

“…we ended the walk at Saltbush Coffee on Darby Street in Newcastle — call ahead on (02) 5550 1234 on weekends.”

A mention inside a local food blog post. No directory form, no link — still a citation.

Full vs partial citations

A full citation shows name, address and phone. A partial citation shows only some of them — for example, a news article that names your business and city. Partial citations still help, especially for brand prominence and AI search, but full citations are what engines use to confirm location.

Is your Google Business Profile a citation?

Yes — and it’s the most important one you have. Your Google Business Profile (GBP, formerly Google My Business) is the record Google ranks in the local pack, and AI tools increasingly quote GBP data directly. Every other citation should match it.

Why experts sometimes say “no”

Some practitioners reserve “citation” for third-party sites and treat GBP, Apple Business Connect and Bing Places as “core platforms”. The distinction is academic; practically, treat them as the master records the rest of the web should agree with.

Types of Local Citations (With Examples)

Citations fall into two families — structured (business information in dedicated fields) and unstructured (mentions inside ordinary content) — plus the data pipelines and niche sources that feed them.

Type What it is Examples (US / UK / AU) Value in 2026
Core platforms Search and map listings you claim and verify Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places Highest — the master records
General directories National business listing sites Yelp, BBB, Yellow Pages / Yell, Thomson Local / Yellow Pages AU, TrueLocal High for the top 10–20; low beyond
Data aggregators Wholesale business databases that feed apps, GPS and directories Data Axle, Neustar Localeze, Foursquare (mainly US) Medium — reach and consistency
Industry / niche Directories for one profession Avvo, Healthgrades, Houzz, Angi, Checkatrade, hipages High — relevance and AI trust
Hyper-local City, county, chamber or neighborhood sources Chamber of commerce, city business directories, local news High — locality signal
Social profiles Business pages with NAP fields Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Nextdoor Medium — consistency and discovery
Unstructured mentions NAP or name inside articles, blogs, forums Local news, food blogs, Reddit threads, podcasts Rising — AI assistants weigh them
Curated “best of” lists Editorial roundups of top local businesses “Best dentists in Austin”, “Top 10 cafés in Bristol” Very high for AI recommendations
Government & associations Licensing boards, trade bodies, accreditation lists State bar, Gas Safe Register, Master Builders High authority
Review platforms Sites built around reviews Trustpilot, TripAdvisor, Google, Yelp, ProductReview.com.au High — reviews and citations combined

Structured citations

A structured citation stores your details in labeled fields — name, street, city, postcode, phone, category. Search engines can read these with certainty, which is why they are the backbone of citation building. Claim and verify them wherever possible; verified listings are harder for others to edit.

Unstructured citations

An unstructured citation is a mention inside normal content: a newspaper feature, a supplier’s “where to buy” page, a charity event write-up, a wedding blog, a Reddit recommendation. You can’t submit these — you earn them through PR, partnerships, sponsorships and community work.

Why “best of” lists matter so much now

When someone asks an AI assistant “best family dentist in Austin”, the model leans on third-party sources that already rank businesses. In Whitespark’s 2026 AI-visibility scoring, presence on expert-curated “best of” lists, prominence on key industry domains and the quality of unstructured citations were three of the top five factors. Getting onto the lists that already rank for your “best [service] in [city]” searches is now a core citation task.

Data aggregators

Data aggregators collect and validate business records from public filings, telecoms data and submissions, then license them to hundreds of directories, map products and in-car navigation systems. In the US the three that matter are Data Axle (formerly Infogroup), Neustar Localeze (part of TransUnion) and Foursquare (which absorbed Factual).

Do you need to submit to aggregators?

For US businesses, usually yes — it is the efficient way to correct data on sites that don’t accept direct submissions. Expect a small annual fee per aggregator or per location through a reseller. Aggregator submissions are slow (often 4–12 weeks to propagate), so start early.

UK, Australian and Canadian businesses

These markets have fewer aggregator pipelines with comparable reach, so most citation work is done directly on each directory or through a listings platform. Plan for more manual submissions outside the US.

Industry and niche citations

Industry US sources UK sources Australia sources
Legal Avvo, Justia, FindLaw, Martindale, state bar Law Society “Find a Solicitor”, Chambers Law society directories by state
Healthcare & dental Healthgrades, Zocdoc, Vitals, WebMD NHS service finder (eligible providers), Doctify HealthEngine, Healthdirect (eligible providers)
Home services & trades Angi, HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack, Houzz, Porch Checkatrade, MyBuilder, Rated People, TrustATrader hipages, Oneflare, ServiceSeeking
Restaurants & hospitality TripAdvisor, OpenTable, Zomato/local guides TripAdvisor, OpenTable, Time Out TripAdvisor, Zomato, Broadsheet
Automotive Cars.com, RepairPal, CarGurus Motor Ombudsman, WhoCanFixMyCar Carsguide, CarExpert garages
Accounting & finance CPA directories, NAPFA (advisers) ICAEW / ACCA directories, Unbiased CPA Australia, CA ANZ “Find a CA”

Only list where you genuinely qualify. Professional registers verify membership; misrepresenting it is a legal risk, not just an SEO one.

Citations vs backlinks vs brand mentions

Local citation Backlink Unlinked brand mention
What it is Your NAP on another site A clickable link to your site Your brand name without a link
Needs a link? No Yes No
Main job Verify existence, location, consistency Pass authority, drive organic rankings Build prominence and AI association
Typical link type Often nofollow (when linked) Followed or nofollow None
Strongest impact Local pack trust, AI recommendations Local organic and domain authority AI answers, brand search demand
Can one item be all three? Yes. A local newspaper article naming your business with address and a link is a citation, a backlink and a brand mention at once — which is why it is so valuable.

Why Local Citations Matter for SEO in 2026

Google ranks local results on three things it publicly names: relevance, distance and prominence. Citations touch all three. Categories and descriptions support relevance; consistent addresses keep your pin and proximity correct; and being mentioned across trusted sites is part of prominence.

What the 2026 ranking-factor data says

The most-cited industry study, Whitespark’s 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors (published November 2025, 47 experts, 187 factors), added AI search visibility as a scored area for the first time. The citation picture is clear:

Measure Citation signal weight / rank What it means for you
Local pack / Maps group weight ≈ 6% Foundational, not decisive — GBP and reviews matter more
Local organic group weight ≈ 7% Supports website rankings for “service + city”
AI search visibility group weight ≈ 13% Roughly double — citations are a major AI trust layer
Consistency on Google Maps, Bing Maps, Apple Maps #28 of 187 (pack) Fix the core platforms first
Quality/authority of structured citations #49 (pack) Quality beats quantity
Quality of unstructured citations (news, blogs, gov, associations) #64 (pack) · #37 (organic) Earned mentions carry real weight
Consistency on data aggregators #85 (pack) Useful for reach, not a ranking lever by itself
Quantity of structured citations #110 (pack) Mass submissions add little

“Citations are back” — the AI effect

Citation signals had been declining in importance for a decade. AI search reversed that story: assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and Ask Maps don’t have your business in a private database you can edit. They cross-check what the open web says about you. If ten trusted sources agree on your name, location, services and reputation, you are a safe recommendation. If they disagree, a competitor is safer.

How citations influence AI search, ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews

AI assistants use citations in three ways: to verify that a business exists at the stated location, to describe it (services, hours, specialties, accessibility, price level) and to rank it against alternatives using third-party opinions such as reviews and “best of” lists.

How an AI assistant checks a local business (simplified)

  1. It interprets the query: service, location, qualifiers (“open now”, “kid-friendly”, “emergency”).
  2. It retrieves candidates from maps data (Google, Apple, Bing) and web results.
  3. It cross-checks facts across directories, review sites and articles.
  4. It prefers candidates with consistent facts and positive third-party coverage.
  5. It writes an answer and often cites the directories or lists it relied on.
Seven AI-ready citation actions
  1. Make GBP, Apple Business Connect and Bing Places identical and complete.
  2. Write the first sentence of every listing description as a clear fact: “[Business] is a [category] in [city] that [main service].”
  3. List on the top industry directories AI tools cite for your category (ask ChatGPT and Gemini which sites they trust for your niche, then check).
  4. Pitch the “best [service] in [city]” articles that already rank.
  5. Collect reviews beyond Google — on the industry platform your customers use.
  6. Earn two or three local press or association mentions per quarter.
  7. Remove or correct every old address and phone number you can find.

The indirect benefits

  • Referral traffic and leads from directories people still browse (Yelp, Checkatrade, hipages, TripAdvisor).
  • Reviews on platforms customers trust in your industry.
  • Brand protection — claimed listings can’t easily be hijacked or edited by others.
  • Suspension resilience — consistent public records help when Google re-verifies or reviews a profile.
  • Search result real estate — directory pages often rank on page one for “service + city” when your site does not.

What Citations Will Not Do: Myths vs Facts

Honest expectations save money. Here is what we tell every client before they buy citation work.

Myth Fact
“500 citations will get me into the 3-pack.” Quantity of structured citations ranked #110 of 187 for pack rankings. After the top few dozen relevant sites, returns are close to zero.
“Every comma must match exactly.” Search engines normalize common variations (“St” / “Street”, “Ste” / “Suite”). Wrong addresses and old phone numbers are what hurt.
“Citations replace a good Google Business Profile.” Primary category, proximity, reviews and GBP completeness outweigh citations for map rankings.
“Citations are dead.” For pure map rankings their weight has shrunk; for AI search visibility it has roughly doubled.
“A citation needs a link.” The mention itself is the signal. Links are a bonus.
“Paid listings rank you higher on Google.” Paying a directory for an upgraded listing may help on that directory, not on Google.
“Once built, citations look after themselves.” Data decays: directories re-import old records, staff edit listings, aggregators overwrite fields. Check at least twice a year.

How Many Local Citations Do You Need?

There is no magic number. The right target is “every important, relevant source — correct, complete and claimed”. A common practitioner benchmark is the top 30–50 relevant sites per location, then stopping and shifting effort to reviews, content and earned mentions.

Business type Sensible target Priority mix
Service-area business (plumber, cleaner, mobile vet) 30–50 Core four + sites that support hidden addresses + trade platforms
Single-location storefront (dentist, café, salon) 40–70 Core four + national directories + niche + chamber + 3–5 local media
Professional services (law, accounting) 40–80 Professional registers + niche directories + association listings
Multi-location brand 30–60 per location Aggregators (US) + core platforms in bulk + location pages on your site
Online-only business with no customer address 15–30 Brand profiles, industry directories, review platforms — not local maps

How to set your own number

Look at the businesses ranking in the top three map results for your main “service + city” search. Count their citations on relevant sites using a citation tool or manual searches. Match the quality sources they share, then beat them on reviews and earned mentions rather than raw count.

How to Build Local Citations: A 10-Step Process

This is the process our team follows for clients in the US, UK, Canada and Australia. You can run it yourself with a spreadsheet and a few weeks of patience.

Step 1: Lock your canonical NAP

Write one master record and never improvise again. Use the exact name customers see on your signage and legal documents, your verified GBP address and one primary phone number.

Your NAP style guide

  • Name: trading name only — no “Best Plumber Dallas” additions.
  • Address: the format your national postal service uses (USPS, Royal Mail, Australia Post, Canada Post).
  • Phone: local number in national format, plus international format (+1, +44, +61) for sites that ask.
  • Website: one URL — https, with or without “www” exactly as your site resolves.
  • Short description (≈150 characters) and long description (≈750 characters).
  • Primary category and two to four secondary categories.
Suite and unit numbers

Keep the suite or unit number on every listing. Dropping it on some sites is one of the most common causes of duplicate listings in shared buildings.

Toll-free vs local phone numbers

Use a local-area number as the primary phone for local listings. Put toll-free or call-tracking numbers in “additional phone” fields where a site offers them.

Step 2: Use a business email on your own domain

Create listings from an address like listings@yourbusiness.com, not a free webmail account. Submissions are more likely to be approved, and the business keeps control if staff or agencies change.

Step 3: Audit what already exists

Before building anything new, find every listing already out there. Search for your business name, every old address and every old phone number:

  • "Business Name" "City"
  • "(512) 555-0147" and "512-555-0147" (every phone format)
  • "Old Street Address" "Business Name"
  • Citation tools such as BrightLocal, Whitespark or Moz Local for a faster scan

Log each result as correct, incorrect, duplicate or unclaimed.

Step 4: Perfect the core platforms

Claim and complete Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places for Business and your country’s leading directory (Yelp in the US, Yell in the UK, Yellow Pages in Australia and Canada) plus Facebook. These feed or influence most of the ecosystem.

Step 5: Submit to data aggregators (US)

For US locations, submit or correct records with Data Axle, Neustar Localeze and Foursquare, directly or through a reseller. Note your submission dates — propagation takes weeks.

Step 6: Build country directories

Work through the top national sources for your country (see the country table below). Fill every field and verify by phone, postcard or email where offered.

Step 7: Add industry and local citations

Find niche and city sources with searches like:

  • [city] business directory · [city] chamber of commerce members
  • [industry] directory [country] · [industry] association find a member
  • best [service] in [city] — the lists you want to appear on

Step 8: Complete every field

Thin listings waste the opportunity. Add hours, holiday hours, categories, services, payment methods, accessibility attributes, photos and a description.

Description template (works for search and AI)

“[Business name] is a [primary category] in [city, state/county] that [main service] for [customer type]. [One proof point: years trading, accreditation or specialty]. [Service area or opening hours].”

That first sentence is a clean subject–predicate–object fact that both search engines and language models can lift without guessing.

Step 9: Earn unstructured citations

Pitch local journalists with genuine stories, sponsor a community event, join your chamber of commerce, supply quotes to trade publications, and ask suppliers to list you on their “where to buy” or “installer” pages. Two or three quality mentions per quarter is a realistic pace.

Step 10: Track, verify and maintain

Keep a tracking sheet with these columns: Site · URL of listing · Status (live / pending / rejected) · Login owner · Verification method · Date submitted · Date live · Last checked. Re-check core platforms monthly and everything else every six months, and immediately after any move, rebrand or phone change.

Top Local Citation Sites by Country (US, UK, Canada, Australia, NZ, Ireland)

The table lists widely used general sources in each market. Directories change ownership and close, so check each is live and relevant before submitting. Add your industry and city sources on top.

Country Core platforms Leading general directories Notes
United States Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, Facebook Yelp, BBB, Yellow Pages (yp.com), Superpages, MapQuest, Nextdoor, Foursquare, Manta, Hotfrog, Chamber of Commerce sites Use Data Axle, Localeze and Foursquare to reach the long tail
United Kingdom Google, Apple, Bing, Facebook Yell, Thomson Local, Scoot, FreeIndex, Cylex UK, Hotfrog UK, Yelp UK, 192.com, Brownbook Trades: Checkatrade, MyBuilder, TrustATrader. Reviews: Trustpilot
Canada Google, Apple, Bing, Facebook YellowPages.ca, 411.ca, Yelp.ca, BBB, Cylex Canada, Hotfrog Canada, Foursquare Quebec: list French name and description where you trade in French
Australia Google, Apple, Bing, Facebook Yellow Pages (yellow.com.au), TrueLocal, Localsearch, Hotfrog AU, StartLocal, Yelp AU, Word of Mouth Trades: hipages, Oneflare, ServiceSeeking. Reviews: ProductReview.com.au
New Zealand Google, Apple, Bing, Facebook Finda, Yellow NZ, NoCowboys, Neighbourly Small market — prioritize quality over count
Ireland Google, Apple, Bing, Facebook Golden Pages, Cylex Ireland, Hotfrog Ireland Use Eircode in the address

Europe and Asia-Pacific: the same core platforms apply, plus national directories such as Gelbe Seiten (Germany), PagesJaunes (France), De Telefoongids (Netherlands), local.ch (Switzerland), Eniro (Sweden), Gulesider (Norway), Krak (Denmark), Fonecta (Finland), Herold (Austria), PagineGialle (Italy) and Yellow Pages Hong Kong. List in the local language and use local address formats.

UK and Australian spelling note

This page uses US spelling. UK, Irish, Australian and New Zealand readers will see “optimization” written as optimisation, “organization” as organisation, “center” as centre and “neighborhood” as neighbourhood. Use the local spelling inside your own listings and descriptions.

Citation Audit & Cleanup: How to Fix Inconsistent NAP

Most established businesses don’t need hundreds of new citations — they need the wrong ones fixed. A citation audit finds every listing, compares it with your canonical NAP and produces a fix list.

When you need a cleanup

  • You moved, even across the street.
  • You changed phone numbers or switched to a call-tracking number.
  • You rebranded, merged, or bought another business.
  • Your GBP was suspended or asked to re-verify.
  • Customers mention turning up at an old address or calling a dead number.
  • A previous agency created listings under its own logins.

Handling duplicate listings

Duplicates split reviews and confuse engines about which record is real. Keep the oldest verified listing with the most reviews where possible, correct it, and ask the site to merge or remove the others.

On Google

Report a duplicate through the “Suggest an edit” → “Remove this place” → “Duplicate” route on Maps, or ask Google Business Profile support to merge it. Never delete your main verified profile to fix a duplicate.

On directories

Most directories have a “claim” or “report incorrect information” link. Where there is none, email support with proof of ownership (a utility bill or business registration document). Keep a log; some requests take weeks.

Free NAP consistency checker

Paste your master NAP and the details from any listing. The checker normalizes common abbreviations, punctuation and phone formats, then flags the fields that genuinely differ.

Your master (canonical) NAP

Listing to check

Runs in your browser; nothing you type is sent or stored.

Acceptable variations vs real problems

Usually fine: “Road” vs “Rd”, “Suite 210” vs “Ste 210” vs “#210”, “&” vs “and”, phone punctuation, LLC/Ltd/Pty Ltd suffixes on some sites.
Real problems: old addresses, wrong suite numbers, retired or tracking phone numbers as the main number, different business names (old brand), wrong primary category, closed locations still marked open.

Citations for Special Cases

Service-area businesses (hidden address)

If customers don’t visit your premises — plumbers, cleaners, mobile mechanics — Google requires you to hide your address on GBP. Build citations only on sites that let you hide the street address or list a service area, and keep the city and phone consistent. Never use a fake or virtual address to appear “local” to a city you don’t operate in.

Multi-location brands and franchises

  • Give every location its own page on your website with its own NAP, hours and map.
  • Link each location’s GBP to its own location page, not the homepage.
  • Use the same naming pattern everywhere (“Brand – Neighborhood” only if that is the real signage name).
  • Use aggregator and bulk tools for US chains; budget manual work for UK and Australian locations.
  • Assign one owner per location for listing logins and changes.

Virtual offices and coworking spaces

Google does not allow virtual offices or mailboxes as a storefront address unless the location is staffed during business hours. Building citations around an ineligible address increases suspension risk; it does not create a real local presence.

Regulated industries

Lawyers, healthcare providers, financial advisers and some trades must match the name and address on their licence or register. Check professional advertising rules before adding descriptions, and keep listings free of outcome claims.

Healthcare and personal data

Practitioner listings (for example individual dentists inside a practice) are allowed on Google under specific rules. Never put patient information, testimonials that reveal health details, or photos of patients on citation sites.

Call-tracking numbers

Use your main local number as the primary phone everywhere. If a directory allows an additional number, a tracking number can go there. Swapping the primary number on dozens of sites breaks consistency.

DIY vs Listings Software vs Agency: How to Get Citations Built

There are five realistic ways to get citation work done. The right one depends on your time, number of locations and how messy your existing data is.

Option Best for Pros Watch-outs
Do it yourself One location, clean data, spare time Free apart from time; you own every login 15–30 hours for 40 listings; verification calls and postcards
Listings subscription (Yext, Uberall, Moz Local and similar) Multi-location brands needing ongoing sync Fast updates on supported networks; dashboards Coverage varies by country; on some networks, updates may stop or revert when you cancel — ask before signing
One-off citation service (BrightLocal, Whitespark and others) Single or few locations Manual submissions; listings stay live Pay per site; cleanup often priced separately
Local US / UK / AU agency Businesses wanting citations inside a full local SEO plan Same time zone; local knowledge Often the highest cost per citation
Marketplace gigs (Fiverr and similar) Rarely worth it Cheap Bulk low-quality sites, shared logins, no cleanup, duplicates
Managed offshore team (Digital Masters 360) SMBs and agencies wanting manual, documented work at lower cost Manual submissions, cleanup, client-owned logins, white-label option Time-zone gap (we cover it with two shifts and async reporting)

How Long Do Citations Take to Work?

Stage Typical time What happens
Audit 3 business days Every existing listing found and graded
Core platform fixes 1–14 days Edits to GBP, Apple, Bing often go live within days; some need re-verification
Manual submissions go live 1–6 weeks Many directories moderate listings by hand
Aggregator propagation (US) 4–12 weeks Partner sites pull updated records on their own schedules
Search engines recognize new citations 2–12 weeks after live Pages must be crawled; low-authority directories may never be
Measurable ranking / AI visibility change 2–4 months Gradual; strongest where data was previously wrong

What speeds results up

Fixing the core platforms first, verifying listings, earning a few high-authority unstructured mentions, and running review generation at the same time. Citations amplify a strong GBP; they don’t rescue a weak one.

Time zones and communication

Our team works two IST shifts (8:30 am–12:30 pm and 2:00 pm–11:30 pm IST), which gives same-day overlap with every primary market and lets citation submissions progress while you sleep.

Your time zone Live overlap (your local time) Best for
US Eastern (ET) About 9:00 am–2:00 pm (EDT) / 9:00 am–1:00 pm (EST) Morning calls, approvals
US Pacific (PT) About 9:00–11:00 am (PDT) / 9:00–10:00 am (PST) Short check-ins; async updates
UK & Ireland Full business day Anything live
Central Europe (CET) Full business day Anything live
Australia (AEDT, Sydney) About 2:00–6:00 pm Afternoon calls
Singapore / Hong Kong About 11:00 am–6:00 pm and evenings Anything live

Overlaps shift by an hour when the US, UK, EU or Australia change clocks; India does not observe daylight saving time.

How we communicate and report

  • Channels: Slack Connect, Microsoft Teams, email or WhatsApp; calls on Zoom or Google Meet.
  • Response time: within 4 business hours during our shifts.
  • Reports: live-status spreadsheet updated weekly during a build; summary report by the 5th business day of each month for maintenance clients.
  • One named account manager and a fixed team for your listings.

Data privacy and compliance

Citation data is mostly business information, but it becomes personal data when a sole trader’s name or mobile number is the business contact, and listing logins are sensitive. We handle both under the law that applies to you.

Your market Law How we comply
EU / EEA GDPR Data Processing Agreement (Art. 28) with EU Standard Contractual Clauses for transfers to India
United Kingdom UK GDPR & Data Protection Act 2018 DPA with the UK International Data Transfer Addendum (or IDTA)
California, USA CCPA as amended by CPRA Service-provider contract terms: we use data only to perform the services, no selling or sharing
Canada PIPEDA (and Quebec Law 25 where relevant) Contractual safeguards for cross-border processing; transfer disclosure support
Australia Privacy Act 1988 & APP 8 Contract binding us to the Australian Privacy Principles for disclosed data
New Zealand Privacy Act 2020 (IPP 12) Comparable-safeguard contract terms
India (our side) Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 Security safeguards and breach procedures applied to all client data

How we handle listing logins

Credentials are shared through a password manager vault you control, never by email or chat. We use unique passwords per site, enable two-factor authentication where offered, and keep an access log.

The account ownership rule

Every listing is created under an email on your domain. When our engagement ends, you already own every account — offboarding is a handover document, not a negotiation.

Contracts, NDAs, payments and onboarding

  • Contracts: Master Services Agreement plus a Statement of Work for each package; mutual NDA on request before the audit.
  • Currencies: invoices in USD, GBP, EUR, AUD or CAD.
  • Payment methods: international bank transfer (SWIFT), Wise, PayPal or card via Stripe.
  • Terms: one-off packages 50% upfront, 50% on delivery; maintenance billed monthly in advance.
  • Tax paperwork: invoices issued as export of services; W-8BEN-E available to US clients on request.
Day Onboarding step
Day 0 Free 3-business-day citation audit; NDA signed if requested
Day 1–2 MSA/SOW signed; canonical NAP approved; listings email set up on your domain
Day 3–5 Core platforms fixed; duplicates reported
Day 5–15 Manual submissions and aggregator updates
Day 30 / 60 / 90 Live-status reports; final handover of all logins

White-label citation building for agencies

US, UK, Canadian and Australian agencies use us as an unbranded fulfillment team for citation builds, cleanups and ongoing listings management.

What partners get

  • Partner price from $199 / £159 / €185 / A$299 / C$275 per location for a 40-citation build.
  • Unbranded or your-branded reports and spreadsheets.
  • Logins created under your client’s email, never ours.
  • Your NDA; we never contact your clients directly unless you ask.
  • Volume rates from 10 locations a month.
Our partner rule

We only take white-label work we can document line by line. If a location has a guideline problem — a virtual office, keyword-stuffed name or ineligible address — we flag it to you before building anything.

Local SEO Citation FAQs

What is a local SEO citation?

A local SEO citation is any online mention of a business’s name, address and phone number (NAP), such as a listing on Yelp, Apple Maps or a local news site. Search engines and AI assistants use citations to confirm a business is real, where it is and what it does.

What is an example of a local citation?

A Yelp listing showing “Lakeview Family Dental, 1200 Barton Springs Rd, Suite 210, Austin, TX 78704, (512) 555-0147” is a structured citation. A local blog post that mentions the same practice and its street is an unstructured citation. Both count, with or without a link.

What does NAP mean in local SEO?

NAP stands for Name, Address and Phone number. NAPW or NAP+W adds the website URL. Keeping NAP identical across listings is the core of citation consistency.

Are local citations still important in 2026?

Yes, but for different reasons. In Whitespark’s 2026 expert survey, citation signals carry about 6% of local pack weight and about 7% of local organic weight, but roughly 13% of AI search visibility, and three of the top five AI visibility factors are citation-related.

Do citations help with ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews?

They do. AI assistants cross-check business facts across directories, review sites and articles before recommending a business. Consistent citations, presence on industry directories and inclusion in trusted “best of” lists make a business a safer recommendation.

What is the difference between a citation and a backlink?

A citation is a mention of your business details and does not need a link. A backlink is a clickable link to your website that passes authority. A local news article with your address and a link is both.

What are structured and unstructured citations?

Structured citations store your details in labeled fields on directories and platforms such as Google Business Profile, Yelp or Yell. Unstructured citations are mentions inside normal content such as news stories, blogs, Reddit threads or association pages.

How many local citations does a business need?

Most single-location businesses need 30 to 80 relevant, accurate citations. Consistency on the important sites matters far more than total count; quantity of structured citations ranked near the bottom of Whitespark’s 2026 factor list.

How long do citations take to affect rankings?

Listings usually go live within 1 to 6 weeks, US aggregator updates take 4 to 12 weeks to spread, and measurable changes in rankings or AI visibility typically appear over 2 to 4 months.

Are local citations free?

Most directory listings are free to create. Costs come from your time, optional paid upgrades, US data aggregator fees, listings software or an agency’s labor.

How much does citation building cost?

Common market pricing is roughly $3 to $10 per citation or $150 to $600 per package, with local agencies often charging $500 to $2,000 for a project. Digital Masters 360 charges $349 (£279, A$529) for 40 manual citations and $249 (£199, A$379) for an audit and cleanup.

Do inconsistent citations hurt rankings?

Seriously wrong data does: old addresses, retired phone numbers, duplicate listings and different business names confuse search engines and customers and can complicate Google Business Profile verification. Minor formatting differences such as “St” versus “Street” do not matter.

How do I find my existing citations?

Search Google for your business name with your city, every phone number format you have used and every old address. Citation tools such as BrightLocal, Whitespark and Moz Local speed this up. Log each result as correct, incorrect, duplicate or unclaimed.

What are data aggregators and do I need them?

Data aggregators such as Data Axle, Neustar Localeze and Foursquare license business data to hundreds of US directories, apps and navigation systems. US businesses usually benefit from submitting to them; UK, Australian and Canadian businesses rely more on direct submissions.

Can a service-area business build citations without showing its address?

Yes. Hide the address on Google Business Profile and choose directories that let you hide the street address or list a service area. Keep the business name, city and phone consistent, and never use a virtual or fake address.

What should I do with citations after moving or rebranding?

Update your Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect and Bing Places first, then aggregators, then every other listing. Search for the old address and old name to find stragglers, and report duplicates rather than creating new listings.

Should I use Yext or another listings subscription?

Subscriptions suit multi-location brands that need fast, ongoing updates on supported networks. Check country coverage and ask what happens to your listings if you cancel. Single-location businesses often get better value from a one-off manual build plus light maintenance.

Are cheap Fiverr citation packages safe?

Usually not worth it. Bulk packages tend to use low-quality directories that are rarely indexed, create accounts you don’t control and can introduce duplicates or wrong data you then pay to clean up.

Do social media profiles count as citations?

Yes. Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and Nextdoor business profiles that show your name, address or phone are citations, and social mentions by real users act as unstructured citations that AI assistants increasingly notice.

Can an agency in India build citations for a US, UK or Australian business?

Yes. Citation work is done entirely online. Choose a provider that creates listings under your email, signs a data processing agreement or service-provider terms for your jurisdiction, reports live URLs and overlaps with your working hours. Digital Masters 360 in Hyderabad works this way for Tier 1 clients.

Method

We reviewed the pages ranking in Google’s US, UK and Australian results for “what is local seo citation” and “local citations” in October 2026, checked ranking-factor data in Whitespark’s 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors report, and combined it with our own listing workflows. Statistics are attributed to their sources; illustrative price ranges are labeled as such.
