Quick answer
Google Ads vs Meta Ads: Google Ads shows your ad to people already searching for what you sell, so it captures existing demand and usually brings higher-intent leads at a higher cost per click. Meta Ads shows your ad on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp to people who match an interest or profile, so it creates new demand at a lower cost per click. In India, most businesses get the best results by running both: Google for buyers who are ready now, Meta for reach and remarketing.
Google Ads vs Meta Ads: The 30-Second Answer for Indian Businesses
The difference between Google Ads and Meta Ads comes down to one word: intent. On Google, the customer raises their hand first by typing a query like “physiotherapist near me” or “CRM software for small business India”. On Meta, you raise your hand first by putting an ad in front of someone scrolling Reels who has not asked for anything yet.
Neither platform is “better” in general. One is better for your situation, and that depends on whether people already search for your product, how visual it is, what one sale is worth to you and how much you can spend while the platform learns.
Choose Google Ads first if…
- People already search for your service (doctors, CA firms, packers and movers, coaching, B2B software, repairs).
- One sale or client is worth ₹5,000 or more, so a ₹60–₹300 click still pays back.
- You need leads this week and have a landing page or a phone line ready.
- You sell on Shopping-friendly products with clear names and prices.
Choose Meta Ads first if…
- Your product is new, visual or impulse-led (fashion, beauty, food, home décor, events, real estate launches).
- Few people search for it yet, so you need to create demand.
- You want cheap reach in tier-2 and tier-3 cities, or in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil and other regional languages.
- You want conversations on WhatsApp rather than form fills.
Use both when…
You spend more than about ₹40,000 a month, sell a considered purchase (property, education, healthcare, high-ticket D2C), or want Meta to build awareness that later shows up as branded searches on Google. That combination is where most of our clients across India land.

What Is Google Ads and How Does It Work in India?
Google Ads is Google’s pay-per-click advertising platform. You bid on keywords and audiences, and your ads appear on Google Search, Google Maps, YouTube, Gmail, the Discover feed and millions of partner websites and apps. You mostly pay when someone clicks (CPC), though video and display can be bought by views or per thousand impressions (CPM).
Because roughly 96 of every 100 searches in India happen on Google, it is the default place to be found when someone is actively looking. A clinic in Vijayawada, a logistics firm in Pune and a SaaS start-up in Bengaluru all face the same truth: if a buyer searches and you are not there, a competitor is.
Google Ads Campaign Types You Can Run
Google Ads campaign types and when to use them
| Campaign type | Where it shows | Best for | Indian example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search | Google results, AI Overviews / AI Mode where available | High-intent leads and calls | “IVF clinic in Hyderabad cost” |
| Performance Max | Search, YouTube, Display, Gmail, Maps, Discover | E-commerce and lead gen at scale | D2C skincare brand with a product feed |
| Demand Gen | YouTube Shorts, Discover, Gmail | Visual demand creation inside Google | New coaching batch launch |
| Video (YouTube) | YouTube in-stream, Shorts | Awareness, consideration | Real estate walkthrough video |
| Shopping | Shopping tab and product listings | Retail sales | Electronics accessories store |
| Display | Google Display Network sites and apps | Cheap remarketing | Showing a sofa to past site visitors |
| App | Play Store, Search, YouTube | App installs | Fintech or gaming app |
How the Google Ads Auction Decides Who Wins
Google does not simply sell the top spot to the highest bidder. Every search triggers an auction where your Ad Rank depends on your bid, the expected click-through rate, how relevant your ad is to the keyword, the landing page experience and the assets you add (sitelinks, call buttons, images). A well-built account can pay less per click than a competitor and still sit above them.
The three parts of Quality Score
- Expected CTR – how likely people are to click your ad for that keyword.
- Ad relevance – how closely your ad matches the search.
- Landing page experience – speed, relevance and trust on mobile (most Indian searches are on phones).
Pro tip for Indian advertisers
Add your city or language to ad copy only when the keyword has it. “Dentist in Kukatpally” deserves an ad that says Kukatpally; a national keyword like “dental implant cost” does not.
What Is Meta Ads and How Does It Work in India?
Meta Ads (still called Facebook Ads by many) is the advertising system for Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, Threads and the Audience Network, all managed from one tool: Meta Ads Manager. Instead of keywords, you choose an objective and an audience, or let Meta’s AI (Advantage+ audience) find buyers for you based on your pixel and conversion data.
India is one of Meta’s largest markets by users, and its ads remain among the cheapest in the world per thousand impressions. That combination of huge reach and low CPM is why Meta is the first stop for D2C brands, real estate launches and anyone selling something people do not yet know they want. See our full breakdown of how Meta ads work.
Where Meta Ads Appear
- Facebook – Feed, Stories, Reels, Marketplace, in-stream video. Strong with 30+ audiences and tier-2/3 towns.
- Instagram – Feed, Stories, Reels, Explore. Strong with 18–34 urban buyers.
- WhatsApp – click-to-WhatsApp ads open a chat with your business; ads in the Updates tab are rolling out.
- Messenger, Threads and the Audience Network of partner apps.
The Six Meta Campaign Objectives
Meta Ads objectives
| Objective | What Meta optimises for | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Awareness | Reach, ad recall | Launching a brand or a new branch |
| Traffic | Link clicks, landing page views | Rarely; prefer Leads or Sales |
| Engagement | Messages, video views, post engagement | Click-to-WhatsApp conversations |
| Leads | Instant Form or website leads, calls | Real estate, education, services |
| App promotion | Installs, in-app events | Apps |
| Sales | Purchases, add-to-cart (Advantage+ sales) | E-commerce and D2C |
How the Meta Auction Works
Meta picks the ad with the highest total value: your bid, multiplied by the estimated chance that this person takes the action you want, plus ad quality. Since 2025 Meta’s Andromeda ad-retrieval system leans heavily on creative variety: more distinct, good creatives give the AI more ways to find buyers. In practice your creative is now your targeting.
The learning phase
Each ad set needs roughly 50 optimisation events in a week to exit the learning phase. If your cost per lead is ₹300, that means about ₹15,000 a week for one ad set. Below that, results bounce around. Our Meta ads cost in India guide shows the full maths.

Google Ads vs Meta Ads Cost in India (2026 Benchmarks)
The cost question is where most comparisons stop at “Meta is cheaper”. That is true per click and misleading per sale. Here are realistic Indian ranges, then the maths that decides which platform is actually cheaper for you.
Cost per Click, CPM and Cost per Lead Compared
Indian benchmark ranges, 2026 (estimates)
| Metric | Google Search | Google Display / YouTube | Meta (Facebook + Instagram) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost per click (CPC) | ₹10–₹150 (₹200–₹600+ in finance, insurance, legal, MBA) | ₹2–₹15 | ₹3–₹25 |
| Cost per 1,000 impressions (CPM) | Not the usual metric | ₹20–₹120 Display; ₹40–₹200 YouTube | ₹60–₹250 |
| Click-through rate | 3%–8% | 0.3%–1% | 0.8%–2% |
| Landing page conversion rate | 4%–12% | 1%–3% | 2%–6% (Instant Forms 8%–20%) |
| Cost per lead (CPL) | ₹150–₹2,500 | Mainly remarketing | ₹80–₹1,500 |
DM360 estimates from typical Indian accounts. Metros and festive weeks (Diwali, Navratri, IPL, Big Billion Days) run higher; tier-2 cities are often 20%–40% cheaper on Meta.
Minimum Budget for Google Ads and Meta Ads in India
Neither platform has a meaningful legal minimum (Meta allows roughly ₹100 a day; Google lets you set any daily budget). The useful minimum is what gives the AI enough data:
- Google Search: about ₹500–₹1,000 a day per campaign, so you get 10–30 clicks a day in most niches.
- Meta: about ₹500–₹1,000 a day per ad set to start, and enough to reach ~50 results a week to exit learning.
- Both together: plan at least ₹30,000–₹40,000 a month in ad spend to test both properly.
GST on Google Ads and Meta Ads
Both platforms add 18% GST to your ad spend. If you are GST-registered and enter your GSTIN in the billing settings, you can generally claim it as input tax credit. Agency management fees also carry 18% GST.
Worked example: ₹50,000 monthly budget
| Line | Google Ads (₹30,000) | Meta Ads (₹20,000) |
|---|---|---|
| Ad spend | ₹30,000 | ₹20,000 |
| GST @ 18% | ₹5,400 | ₹3,600 |
| Total paid to platform | ₹35,400 | ₹23,600 |
| Est. CPL (local services) | ₹400 | ₹250 |
| Est. leads | ≈ 75 | ≈ 80 |
Illustrative only. Claimable GST lowers your real cost if you are registered; check with your CA.
Why Google Can Be Cheaper Per Sale Even at a Higher CPC
Suppose a Google click costs ₹80 and 8% of clicks become leads, and 30% of those leads buy. Your cost per sale is ₹80 ÷ 0.08 ÷ 0.30 = ₹3,333. A Meta click at ₹12 with a 3% lead rate and a 10% close rate gives ₹12 ÷ 0.03 ÷ 0.10 = ₹4,000. The “expensive” platform won. Always compare cost per sale, not cost per click.
Google Ads vs Meta Ads ROI: Which Gives Better Returns?
There is no universal winner on ROI. Google usually wins on cost per sale where demand already exists; Meta usually wins on scale and on products people buy on impulse. The honest answer comes from your own numbers, so here is the formula we use with every client.
The Break-Even Cost per Lead Formula
Break-even CPL = Average profit per sale × Lead-to-sale rate
If one client brings ₹20,000 profit and you close 1 in 10 leads, you can pay up to ₹2,000 per lead and still break even. Anything below that is profit. Whichever platform delivers leads under that number, at the volume you need, is the right one.
Worked example: an online coaching institute
Course fee ₹30,000, profit ₹18,000, close rate 8%. Break-even CPL = ₹18,000 × 0.08 = ₹1,440. Google Search brings leads at ₹700, Meta at ₹260 but closes at 4%. Meta’s effective cost per enrolment is ₹6,500; Google’s is ₹8,750. Both are profitable, Meta delivers more volume, so the right answer is a 50/50 split with Google protecting branded and high-intent searches.
Why the Two Dashboards Never Agree
Google Ads mostly credits conversions to clicks. Meta also counts people who saw an ad and bought later (view-through). Run both and the two dashboards together often claim more sales than you actually made.
How to compare fairly
- Track every lead’s source in your CRM or a simple Google Sheet using UTM tags.
- Use blended CAC (total ad spend ÷ total new customers) as your north-star number.
- Install the Meta Conversions API and Google enhanced conversions so both platforms see real sales, not just form fills.
- Every quarter, pause one platform in one city for two weeks and watch total sales. That holdout test tells you what each really adds.
Google Ads vs Meta Ads by Industry in India
This is the section most competitors skip. Here is what we see across Indian industries, with a starting budget split you can adjust after month one.
Starting budget split by industry
| Industry | Google : Meta | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Clinics, hospitals, dentists | 60 : 40 | Patients search by treatment and area; Meta for awareness camps and retargeting |
| Real estate | 40 : 60 | Meta Instant Forms and video walkthroughs drive volume; Google catches project-name searches |
| Education & coaching | 50 : 50 | Course searches on Google; parents and students on Instagram and YouTube |
| D2C fashion, beauty, home | 25 : 75 | Visual impulse products; Google Shopping and PMax for brand and product searches |
| B2B, SaaS, manufacturing | 70 : 30 | Buyers search for solutions; Meta mainly for remarketing (add LinkedIn) |
| Local services (CA, legal, repairs, movers) | 70 : 30 | Urgent, high-intent searches and calls |
| Restaurants, cafés, events | 20 : 80 | Reels, offers and WhatsApp orders |
| Finance, insurance, loans | 60 : 40 | High-intent searches; strict policies on both platforms |
| Brand-new product category | 15 : 85 | No search demand yet; build it on Meta first |
Starting points only. Shift 10%–20% a month towards whichever platform has the lower cost per sale.
Real Estate
Meta usually leads on volume: carousel and video ads with a higher-intent Instant Form can produce site-visit enquiries at a fraction of Google’s CPL. Google wins once a project has a name people search. Mention your RERA registration number in every ad, as state RERA rules require it for registered projects.
Healthcare and Clinics
Google Search and call ads dominate because patients search for a treatment and a location. Meta works for health camps, new branches and remarketing. Both platforms restrict health targeting, and India’s Drugs and Magic Remedies Act and NMC guidelines limit what you can claim, so avoid “guaranteed cure” language.
Education and Coaching
Run Google for course-plus-city searches (“CA coaching online”, “NEET coaching fees”) and Meta or YouTube for student-facing video. Parents respond well to WhatsApp conversations in their own language.
D2C and E-commerce
Meta’s Advantage+ sales campaigns are the growth engine for most Indian D2C brands; Google Shopping and PMax catch shoppers comparing products. Watch cash-on-delivery return rates: a cheap Meta purchase that is returned is not cheap.
B2B and SaaS
Google Search is the core because buyers look for specific solutions. Meta is useful for retargeting site visitors and webinar sign-ups. For job-title targeting, LinkedIn Ads often beat both, at a higher cost.
Local Services
Call-focused Google Search ads and an optimised Google Business Profile win. Meta helps with seasonal offers (AC servicing before summer, pest control before monsoon).
Compliance checklist for Indian ads
- ASCI code: no misleading claims; label influencer content.
- DPDP Act 2023: get clear consent for leads you collect and store.
- RERA number on real estate ads.
- Financial services: complete Google’s financial services verification before ads run.
Google Ads vs Meta Ads by Business Goal
Which Is Better for Lead Generation?
For quality, Google. For volume at a lower price, Meta. The fix for Meta’s lead quality is simple: use the higher intent Instant Form, add two qualifying questions (budget, timeline) and verify leads on WhatsApp within five minutes.
Which Is Better for E-commerce Sales?
Meta for discovering new customers, Google Shopping and PMax for shoppers already comparing products. Most profitable Indian stores run both with Meta taking the larger share.
Which Is Better for Brand Awareness?
Meta, with YouTube as the strong Google alternative. Meta’s low Indian CPM buys reach that Search cannot.
Which Is Better for App Installs?
Both work. Google App campaigns reach Play Store users directly, which matters in an Android-heavy market like India; Meta is good at finding engaged users through Reels.
Which Is Better for Walk-ins and Local Footfall?
Google, through Maps, call ads and “near me” searches. Meta radius campaigns help restaurants, salons and showrooms announce offers.
Targeting and Ad Formats: Keywords vs Audiences
How Google Ads Targets
Keywords and match types (broad, phrase, exact), negative keywords, locations down to PIN code radius, languages, devices, ad schedule, Customer Match lists, remarketing and AI-led options such as AI Max for Search and Performance Max that expand beyond your keyword list.
How Meta Ads Targets
Age, gender, location, languages, interests, behaviours, custom audiences (website visitors, video viewers, Instagram engagers, customer lists) and lookalikes. Meta now recommends Advantage+ audience, where your creative and conversion data guide the AI more than manual interests.
Ad Formats Compared
Ad formats
| Google Ads | Meta Ads |
|---|---|
| Responsive search ads (text) | Single image and video |
| Shopping product ads | Reels and Stories (9:16 vertical) |
| YouTube in-stream, Shorts, bumper | Carousel and collection |
| Display banners and responsive display | Instant Experience |
| Call ads and lead form assets | Instant Forms and click-to-WhatsApp |
Creative effort is the hidden cost
Google Search can run on good copy alone. Meta needs a steady supply of fresh creatives, ideally 3–6 new ones every two weeks, because ad fatigue sets in fast in India’s busy feeds. Budget for creative production, not just ad spend. See Meta ad sizes for specs.
India-Specific Factors That Change the Answer
Global comparisons written for the US miss how Indians actually buy. These are the factors that move our recommendations.
Tier-2 and Tier-3 Cities
Meta’s reach is deep in cities like Vizag, Coimbatore, Indore, Lucknow and Nagpur, and CPMs there are often lower than in metros. Google search volume is thinner in these cities for many niches, so Meta often does more of the work outside the top eight metros.
Regional Languages
A Telugu or Tamil creative frequently beats an English one on Meta. On Google, many users still type in English or “Hinglish” even when they speak another language at home, so test both keyword styles.
WhatsApp-First Buyers
Indian customers prefer chatting to filling forms. Meta’s click-to-WhatsApp ads are a big advantage; on Google, add a WhatsApp button to your landing page and track the clicks as conversions.
Seasonality
Costs on both platforms rise during Diwali, Navratri, Dussehra, IPL and big sale events. Plan budgets one month ahead and build remarketing audiences before the peak.
Mobile-first and UPI
Almost all traffic is on mobile. A slow landing page wastes Google’s higher CPC fastest. Offer UPI and WhatsApp follow-up to lift conversion on both platforms.
How to Use Google Ads and Meta Ads Together
The strongest Indian accounts we manage treat the two platforms as one system. Meta creates interest; Google catches the searches that interest produces; both remarket to people who did not convert.
The Full-Funnel Playbook
- Awareness (Meta + YouTube): Reels and short videos to cold audiences.
- Consideration (Meta + Demand Gen): retarget video viewers with proof, reviews and offers.
- Decision (Google Search): capture branded and high-intent searches.
- Re-engage (both): remarket to site visitors, abandoned carts and unclosed leads on WhatsApp.
Signs Your Meta Ads Are Helping Google
Branded searches rise in Google Search Console and Google Ads, and Google’s cost per lead falls during Meta-heavy months. That halo is why judging each platform alone usually under-values Meta.
Rule of thumb
Start with the split in the industry table, keep at least 20% on the second platform for learning, and move budget monthly towards the lower blended cost per sale.

Myths vs Facts
| Myth | Fact |
|---|---|
| “Meta leads are always junk.” | Unqualified forms create junk. Higher-intent forms, qualifying questions and fast WhatsApp follow-up fix most of it. |
| “Google Ads is too expensive for small businesses.” | A tight keyword list in one city at ₹500–₹1,000 a day often beats a broad Meta campaign on cost per sale. |
| “Boosting a post is the same as running ads.” | Boost has limited objectives and controls. Ads Manager gives proper objectives, placements and tracking. |
| “You must pick one platform.” | Most profitable Indian accounts use both, with different jobs. |
| “More budget fixes bad results.” | Fix the offer, landing page and tracking first. Budget only amplifies what already works. |
Common Mistakes We Fix in New Accounts
- Sending Google traffic to the home page instead of a focused landing page.
- Running Meta with no pixel or Conversions API, so the AI optimises blind.
- Broad match keywords with no negatives, burning budget on irrelevant searches.
- One creative running for months on Meta.
- Agency-owned ad accounts. You should always own your Google Ads and Meta Business accounts.
How to Choose Between Google Ads and Meta Ads in 5 Steps
Check search demand
Use Google Keyword Planner to see if people in your target cities search for your product. High volume points to Google first; little volume points to Meta first.
Work out your break-even cost per lead
Multiply profit per sale by your lead-to-sale rate. This is the most you can pay per lead.
Set up tracking on both
Install Google Ads conversion tracking with enhanced conversions and the Meta Pixel with Conversions API, plus UTM tags into your CRM or sheet.
Test both for 30 days
Start with the industry split, at least ₹500–₹1,000 a day per campaign or ad set, and fresh creatives on Meta.
Reallocate by cost per sale
Each month, move 10%–20% of budget towards the platform with the lower blended cost per sale, keeping the other alive for learning and remarketing.
Google Ads vs Meta Ads: Frequently Asked Questions
Which is better for a small business in India, Google Ads or Meta Ads?
If customers already search for your service, start with Google Ads in one or two cities. If your product is visual or new, or you want WhatsApp enquiries cheaply, start with Meta Ads. With ₹30,000–₹40,000 or more a month, test both.
Is Google Ads more expensive than Meta Ads in India?

Which is easier for beginners?
Meta is easier to launch; Google Search is easier to make profitable with a small, tightly focused budget. Both need conversion tracking from day one.
