What every UK social media manager job description must include
| Section | Why it matters | UK-specific tip |
|---|---|---|
| Job title & level | Matches what candidates search for | Use ‘Social Media Manager’, not ‘Social Ninja’ or ‘Content Wizard’ |
| Salary range | Adverts with pay attract more applicants | Show a real £ range; many UK job boards reward it |
| Location & working pattern | Hybrid/remote is a deciding factor | State office days and whether weekend cover is paid or time off in lieu |
| Platforms & budget | Shows the true size of the job | Name each platform and the monthly ad budget |
| Outcomes, not just tasks | Attracts strategic candidates | Add 2–3 measurable year-one goals |
| Inclusive wording | Widens your talent pool | Avoid age- or gender-coded words (Equality Act 2010) |
Equality Act 2010: wording to avoid in your advert
Phrases such as “digital native”, “young and energetic team” or “recent graduate only” can indicate age discrimination, and words like “dominant” or “rockstar” skew applicant pools. Describe the skills you need instead, for example “confident with TikTok and short-form video trends”.
Social media manager duties and responsibilities
A social media manager’s responsibilities fall into eight areas. In a small business one person covers all of them; in a larger team some move to specialists such as a content creator, community manager or paid social executive.
Strategy and planning
Set objectives tied to business goals, choose platforms based on where the audience is, define content pillars and tone of voice, and plan quarterly campaigns around product launches and UK seasonal moments (Black Friday, Christmas, January sales, summer holidays).
Content creation and publishing
Write captions, script and edit short-form video, design carousels, repurpose blogs and webinars, and schedule everything in a management tool so it publishes at the times the audience is active.
Community management and social customer care
Reply to comments, DMs and reviews, route complaints to the right team, and build relationships with followers, partners and advocates. Many consumers now expect a reply within 24 hours.
Paid social advertising
Build audiences, set budgets, write ad copy, run A/B tests and optimise for cost per lead or return on ad spend in Meta Ads Manager, LinkedIn Campaign Manager and TikTok Ads Manager.
Analytics and reporting
Track reach, engagement, click-through, conversions and revenue; tag links with UTMs; connect platform data to Google Analytics 4 and the CRM; and present clear monthly insights rather than vanity metrics.
Social listening, reputation and crisis response
Monitor brand mentions, competitors and trends, spot negative sentiment early, and follow an approved escalation plan when something goes wrong.
Influencer, creator and UGC partnerships
Shortlist creators, agree briefs and usage rights, check #ad disclosure, and measure the return on each partnership.
Governance, security and compliance
Maintain the social media policy, control account access with two-factor authentication, keep approval workflows, and make sure posts, competitions and ads follow UK advertising and data-protection rules.
A typical day in the life of a UK social media manager
| Time (UK) | Typical activity |
|---|---|
| 09:00 | Check overnight comments, DMs and mentions; reply or escalate |
| 09:30 | Review yesterday’s performance and paid campaign spend |
| 10:00 | Team stand-up; approve today’s scheduled posts |
| 11:00 | Create or edit content: video, carousels, captions |
| 13:30 | Paid social optimisation and A/B test review |
| 14:30 | Influencer / creator emails and briefs |
| 15:30 | Social listening and trend scan; plan reactive content |
| 16:30 | Update content calendar; draft next week’s posts for sign-off |
Social media manager skills, tools and qualifications
Hard skills (and how to test them in an interview)
| Skill | Why it matters | How to test it |
|---|---|---|
| Social copywriting | Clear, on-brand captions drive clicks and saves | Ask for 3 captions for one product, one per platform |
| Short-form video | Reels, TikTok and Shorts dominate reach | Review a reel they scripted and edited |
| Analytics & GA4 | Proves ROI beyond likes | Give a sample report; ask for 3 insights |
| Paid social | Most reach is now paid or boosted | Ask how they would cut cost per lead by 20% |
| Community & customer care | Protects reputation and retention | Role-play an angry public complaint |
| Social SEO | Social platforms act as search engines | Ask how they choose keywords for TikTok/Instagram |
| Project management | Keeps calendars and approvals on time | Ask to walk through their weekly workflow |
Soft skills
- Judgement and calm under pressure (crisis and complaints)
- Curiosity and trend awareness without chasing every trend
- Stakeholder communication: explaining results to directors in plain English
- Empathy and cultural awareness for UK and international audiences
- Organisation and attention to detail
AI fluency in 2026
UK employers increasingly expect social media managers to use AI tools for ideation, first drafts, caption variations, subtitles, image resizing and report summaries, while keeping human judgement for brand voice, facts and sensitive replies. A good candidate can explain where they use AI, how they fact-check it, and what they never automate (complaints, crisis replies, anything legal).
Tools a social media manager uses
| Category | Common UK tools |
|---|---|
| Scheduling & management | Sprout Social, Hootsuite, Buffer, Later, Meta Business Suite, Agorapulse |
| Design & video | Canva, Adobe Express, Adobe Premiere Pro, CapCut |
| Analytics | Native platform insights, Google Analytics 4, Looker Studio |
| Ads | Meta Ads Manager, LinkedIn Campaign Manager, TikTok Ads Manager |
| Listening | Brandwatch, Talkwalker, Sprout Listening, Mention |
| Collaboration | Slack, Microsoft Teams, Asana, Trello, Notion |
Qualifications: do you need a degree?
No. Most UK employers hire on portfolio and results. A degree in marketing, communications or media helps at entry level, and recognised courses such as the CIM Digital Marketing qualifications, the Digital Marketing Institute certifications, Meta Blueprint, Google Analytics certification or HubSpot Social Media Marketing add credibility. Apprenticeships (for example the Level 3 Content Creator or Level 4 Digital Marketer) are a growing route in England.
Social media job levels and similar roles
From social media assistant to head of social

| Senior Social Media Manager | 5–8 years | Multi-brand or multi-market strategy, paid + organic, agency management |
| Head of Social / Social Media Director | 8+ years | Team leadership, crisis comms, social as business intelligence |
Social media manager vs similar roles
| Role | How it differs from a social media manager |
|---|---|
| Content creator | Specialises in producing and often appearing in video; less strategy and reporting |
| Community manager | Focuses on conversations, groups and advocates rather than the full channel mix |
| Digital marketing manager | Covers SEO, email, PPC and the website as well as social |
| Paid social specialist | Only manages advertising budgets, targeting and testing |
| Social media executive (UK term) | Usually the junior delivery role below a manager |
Social media manager salary in the UK (2026)
UK pay varies widely by seniority, sector and location. The ranges below combine published 2026 salary data; always check live adverts for your city before setting a band.
UK salary by level

| Average across UK social media roles | ≈ £46,000 | Digital Waffle 2026 social media salary guide |
London vs the rest of the UK
London roles typically pay 15–30% more than the same role in Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Bristol, Glasgow or Cardiff, mainly because of the London weighting and the concentration of agencies and consumer brands. Remote-first UK employers increasingly pay a single national band.
How UK pay compares with the US and Australia
In the United States, Indeed reports an average of about $62,500 a year for social media managers, with typical salaries ranging from roughly $18,000 to $138,000 depending on state and seniority. Australian pay sits broadly between UK and US levels; we publish AUD bands on our Australian version of this guide.
What pushes a social media manager’s salary up
- Proven paid social results with budget ownership
- B2B, finance, tech or regulated-sector experience
- Leading a team or managing an agency
- Strong video production and creator partnerships
- Data skills: GA4, attribution, dashboards
Freelance social media manager rates (UK)
UK freelancers usually charge by retainer rather than by hour. As a guide, expect roughly £300–£800 a month for one or two platforms with light posting, and £1,000–£2,500+ a month for a strategic freelancer covering several platforms, video and ads. Check IR35 status if a freelancer works like an employee (see the UK law section).
Social media manager KPIs and a 30-60-90 day plan
| Goal | KPIs to track | Where to measure |
|---|---|---|
| Awareness | Reach, impressions, follower growth, share of voice | Native insights, listening tool |
| Engagement | Engagement rate, saves, shares, comments, video completion | Native insights, scheduling tool |
| Traffic | Link clicks, CTR, sessions from social | GA4 with UTM tags |
| Leads & sales | Conversions, cost per lead, ROAS, revenue from social | GA4, Ads Manager, CRM |
| Customer care | First response time, resolution rate, sentiment | Inbox tool, listening tool |
30-60-90 day plan for a new social media manager
- Days 1–30, audit: access and security check, channel audit, competitor review, baseline KPIs, stakeholder interviews.
- Days 31–60, plan: strategy and content pillars signed off, calendar and approval workflow live, reporting dashboard built.
- Days 61–90, optimise: first campaign launched, paid tests running, first monthly report with three recommendations.

UK laws and rules a social media manager must follow
Few job descriptions mention compliance, yet a single non-compliant post can lead to an ASA ruling, an ICO complaint or a fine. Add the relevant rules to your job description and onboarding.
ASA CAP Code: influencer marketing and #ad
Paid or gifted content must be obviously identifiable as advertising, usually with a clear label such as #ad at the start of the post. The social media manager should brief creators on labelling and keep a record of agreements.
CMA rules and the DMCC Act 2024: fake reviews and hidden ads
The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 gives the Competition and Markets Authority direct fining powers and bans fake reviews and concealed incentivised reviews. Never buy reviews or followers, and do not post staff reviews as customers.
UK GDPR, Data Protection Act 2018 and PECR
Customer DMs, competition entries and lead-gen forms are personal data. Collect only what you need, explain how it will be used, get consent for marketing emails or texts (PECR), and keep exported data secure. These rules apply equally if an outsourced team handles the data.
Online Safety Act 2023 and community moderation
The Act mainly places duties on platforms, but brands running groups, communities or comment sections should have a moderation policy for illegal and harmful content and a clear process for removing it and reporting it.
Hiring law: Equality Act, right to work and IR35
- Equality Act 2010: inclusive advert wording and reasonable adjustments in interviews.
- Right to work: UK employers must check a new employee’s right to work before they start.
- IR35 (off-payroll working): if a freelance social media manager works like an employee (set hours, controlled by you, no substitution), employment-tax rules may apply. Medium and large businesses must assess status themselves.
Quick IR35 check for freelance social media managers
Ask: Do they decide how and when the work is done? Can they send a substitute? Do they work for other clients? Are they paid for deliverables rather than hours? Mostly “yes” points towards outside IR35. HMRC’s Check Employment Status for Tax (CEST) tool gives a formal view. Outsourcing to an agency with defined deliverables avoids the question for most buyers.
How to hire a social media manager in the UK
Step-by-step hiring process
- Define the goal (awareness, leads, sales, recruitment) and the platforms that matter.
- Decide the model: in-house, freelance, UK agency or offshore dedicated manager.
- Write the job description using the template above and set a realistic salary or budget.
- Advertise on LinkedIn, Indeed UK, CV-Library, Totaljobs, specialist boards and your own channels.
- Shortlist on portfolio and results, not follower counts.
- Interview, then set a paid or short practical task.
- Check references, right to work (employees) or IR35 status (freelancers).
- Onboard with access, brand guidelines, approval workflow and 90-day goals.
10 interview questions for a social media manager
- Walk me through a campaign you planned from goal to result.
- Which metric do you report to directors, and why?
- How do you decide which platforms a brand should be on?
- Tell me about a post that went wrong and what you did.
- How would you grow our LinkedIn engagement by 30% in six months?
- How do you use AI in your workflow, and where do you not use it?
- How do you brief and measure influencers?
- What would you do in your first 30 days here?
- How do you stay compliant with #ad and data-protection rules?
- How do you manage approvals with busy stakeholders?
Practical test task (2 hours)
Give candidates your brand guidelines and one product. Ask for: a one-page monthly plan for two platforms, three captions, one short video script, and the three KPIs they would report. Pay for longer tasks.
Red flags when hiring
- Promises of guaranteed followers or viral posts
- Reporting only likes and follower numbers
- No examples of paid social or analytics
- Asking for your main account password instead of role-based access
- No understanding of #ad or UK GDPR
In-house vs freelance vs UK agency vs offshore social media manager
| Option | Typical UK monthly cost | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| In-house employee | ≈ £3,500–£4,500 total employer cost (mid-level) | Brands needing a full-time on-site voice | Recruitment time, holiday/sick cover, single point of failure |
| UK freelancer | ≈ £300–£2,500 retainer | Small businesses, defined deliverables | Capacity, IR35 for long exclusive work |
| UK agency | ≈ £1,500–£5,000+ retainer | Multi-platform campaigns with creative team | Cost, junior staff on your account |
| Offshore agency (e.g. DM360, India) | from £349; dedicated manager from £1,250 | SMEs and UK agencies wanting senior output at lower cost | Choose a team with UK-hours cover, a GDPR-ready DPA and clear reporting |
True annual cost of an in-house UK social media manager
| Cost item | Example (£38,000 salary) |
|---|---|
| Base salary | £38,000 |

| Training, equipment, overheads | ≈ £1,000–£2,500 |

Outsourcing your social media manager to India: what UK buyers need to know
Digital Masters 360 is a Hyderabad-native digital marketing agency that delivers social media management 100% online to clients in the UK, US, Canada, Australia, Ireland, Europe, Singapore, Japan and Hong Kong. Here is exactly how it works, so you can judge any offshore provider, not just us.
Cost savings vs a UK hire or agency
| Package | GBP / month | USD | EUR | AUD |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter Social | £349 | $465 | €400 | A$700 |
| Growth Social | £649 | $865 | €745 | A$1,300 |
| Dedicated Social Media Manager | £1,250 | $1,665 | €1,440 | A$2,500 |
A dedicated DM360 social media manager at £1,250 a month costs roughly 70% less than the ≈ £3,900–£4,100 monthly employer cost of a £38,000 UK hire, with holiday cover, a designer and a reviewer included.
Why it costs less (and what it does not mean)
The saving comes from lower salary and office costs in Hyderabad, not from cutting corners. Your account is run by experienced marketers, every post goes through a second-person quality check, and you approve the calendar before anything goes live.

- Content calendar in Google Sheets, Notion or your tool for approval
- Monthly report and 30-minute review call; quarterly strategy review
Data privacy and compliance (UK GDPR, EU GDPR, CCPA, Australian Privacy Act)
India does not currently have a UK adequacy decision, so a UK client sharing personal data with an Indian processor needs an appropriate safeguard: the UK International Data Transfer Agreement (IDTA) or the UK Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses, plus a Data Processing Agreement. For EU clients we use EU SCCs; for US clients we sign CCPA/CPRA service-provider terms; for Australian clients we follow APP 8 on cross-border disclosure. India’s own Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 also applies to us.
Safeguards we put in place
- Data Processing Agreement and IDTA / SCCs signed before access
- Role-based access through Meta Business Suite, LinkedIn page roles and your scheduler, never shared passwords
- Two-factor authentication on every account
- No customer data downloaded to personal devices; access removed within 24 hours of exit
Access principles
Least privilege, named users only, logged approvals, and you remain the owner of every account, asset and ad account.
Documents to ask any offshore provider for
DPA, IDTA or UK Addendum, NDA, master services agreement, information-security summary, sub-processor list and an exit/handover plan.
Contracts, NDAs, payments and onboarding
Contracts and NDAs
Mutual NDA before discovery, then a master services agreement and statement of work stating deliverables, response times, approval rules, IP ownership (all content you pay for is yours) and a 30-day rolling notice period after the first three months.
Payments
Monthly in advance in GBP, USD, EUR or AUD via Wise, bank transfer or PayPal. Services supplied from outside the UK to a UK VAT-registered business are generally accounted for by the customer under the reverse charge; ask your accountant to confirm your position.
Onboarding in 7 days
- Day 1: kick-off call, goals, brand guidelines, access requests
- Days 2–3: audit of channels and competitors
- Days 4–5: strategy and first content calendar for approval
- Days 6–7: scheduling, reporting dashboard and first posts live
White-label social media management for UK agencies
UK, US and Australian agencies can resell our social media management under their own brand. Should I hire an in-house social media manager or outsource?
Hire in-house if you need someone on site daily and can afford around £46,000+ a year in total employer cost. Outsource if you want a full team (manager, designer, reviewer) for a lower fixed monthly fee and flexible commitment.
Is it safe to outsource social media management to India from the UK?
Yes, if the provider signs a Data Processing Agreement and the UK IDTA or UK Addendum, uses role-based access instead of shared passwords, offers UK-hours cover and lets you keep ownership of all accounts and content.
Can an offshore social media manager work UK hours?
Yes. India is 4.5 hours ahead of the UK in summer and 5.5 hours in winter, so a 13:30–22:00 or 14:30–23:00 IST shift covers the full UK working day.
What tools does a social media manager use?
Scheduling tools such as Sprout Social, Hootsuite or Buffer; Canva, Adobe or CapCut for design and video; native insights and GA4 for analytics; Meta, LinkedIn and TikTok ad managers; and listening tools such as Brandwatch.
Do social media managers need to follow advertising rules in the UK?
Yes. Paid and gifted posts must be clearly labelled under the ASA CAP Code, fake or incentivised reviews are banned under the DMCC Act 2024, and personal data must be handled under UK GDPR and PECR.
