You opened the WhatsApp Business app, looked for New community, and it wasn’t there. You are not doing anything wrong. This guide explains exactly why, gives you the setup Indian businesses actually use to run a customer community, and walks you through every step on Android, iPhone and WhatsApp Web. Quick answer
As of September 2026, WhatsApp's Help Center says you can't create a community inside the WhatsApp Business app. To run one for your business, create it in the standard WhatsApp app (or WhatsApp Web): Chats → New chat → New community → Get started, add a name, description and photo, then link groups and tap Create. Add your WhatsApp Business number to the linked groups as a group admin.

Can You Create a Community in WhatsApp Business? (The 2026 Answer)
Not inside the Business app itself, not right now. WhatsApp’s own Help Center page on communities carries a short note stating that you can’t currently create a community on the WhatsApp Business app. A WhatsApp Business account can still take part in communities it has been added to, and it can create ordinary groups, broadcast lists and channels.
That single fact is why so many Indian shop owners, coaches and D2C founders search for how to create community in WhatsApp Business and come away confused. Several popular guides still describe a “Communities tab” in the Business app. Meta rolls features out gradually, so if your Business app does show a New community option, the steps later in this guide work the same way. If it doesn’t, use the setup below.
What a WhatsApp Business account can and can't do with communities
| Action | WhatsApp Business app | Standard WhatsApp (Messenger) |
|---|---|---|
| Create a new community | Not available (per Help Center, Sep 2026) | Yes – Android, iPhone, Web/Desktop |
| Join a community / linked groups | Yes | Yes |
| Be a group admin inside a linked group | Yes (promote like any member) | Yes |
| Send community-wide announcements | Only if made a community admin | Yes, as community admin |
| Create ordinary groups (up to 1,024) | Yes | Yes |
| Catalogue, quick replies, labels, away message | Yes | No |
| Cost | Free | Free |
The setup most Indian businesses use
- Owner account: a regular WhatsApp account on a second number you control (most Indian phones are dual SIM, and an eSIM also works). Give it your brand name and logo. This account creates and owns the community.
- Sales account: your existing WhatsApp Business number keeps the catalogue, quick replies and customer chats. Add it to the linked groups and make it a group admin so customers see a verified-looking business profile answering questions.
- Co-admins: promote one or two trusted staff so the community never depends on one phone.
Why communities matter for businesses in India
India is WhatsApp’s largest market, and customers here already live in groups: apartment associations in Gachibowli, parent groups for CBSE schools, JEE batch groups in Kota and Hyderabad, trader groups in Surat and Ludhiana. A community lets you organise several of those groups under one brand, send one announcement that reaches everyone, and stop copy-pasting the same offer into ten chats. WhatsApp itself notes that using community announcements instead of repeatedly messaging groups or people may reduce the risk of being flagged as spam.
How to Create Community in WhatsApp Business: Step-by-Step Setup
Below is the complete process. Menu labels move slightly between app versions; where the path differs, both routes are given. Update WhatsApp from Google Play or the App Store before you start.
Before you start: 5-minute checklist
- A second number on regular WhatsApp (dual SIM or eSIM) with your brand name and logo as the profile.
- Community name (keep it short and specific, e.g. “Sri Laxmi Sarees – Hyderabad”).
- Description that says who it’s for, what members get and how often you post.
- Square logo (at least 640 × 640 px) for the community photo.
- Group plan: 2–5 topic groups to start (you can link up to 100 later).
- Admin plan: who posts announcements, who moderates, who answers orders.
Method 1: Create a WhatsApp community on Android
Step 1 – Open the Chats tab
Open the standard WhatsApp app (green icon, not the Business app with the ‘B’). Stay on the Chats tab.
Step 2 – Tap New chat, then New community
Tap the green New chat button, then New community. On some versions it sits under the ⋮ More options menu, or in a separate Communities tab. Tap Get started.
Step 3 – Add name, description and photo
Type the community name, add the description and tap the camera icon to set your logo. Tap the green arrow to continue.
Step 4 – Add existing groups or create new ones
Choose Add existing groups (you must be an admin of those groups) or Create new group. An Announcements group is created automatically for every community.
Step 5 – Tap Create
Tap the tick / Create. Your community is live. WhatsApp does not notify your contacts, so nobody is added or alerted until you invite them.
Step 6 – Rename and pin the announcements group
Open Community info → Announcements and give it a clear name, e.g. “📢 Offers & Updates – Sri Laxmi Sarees”. Post your welcome message and community rules first.
Step 7 – Set community permissions
In Community info → Community settings, choose who can add groups (switch to Only community admins for a business) and who can add members. Promote co-admins from the member list.
Method 2: Create a WhatsApp community on iPhone
- Open WhatsApp (not WhatsApp Business) and go to Chats.
- Tap the New chat (+ / pencil) icon → New community. On older versions, use the Communities tab at the bottom → New community.
- Tap Get started, enter the name, description and photo, then tap Next.
- Tap Create new group or Add existing groups.
- Tap Create. Open the Announcements group and post your welcome message.
Method 3: Create a community on WhatsApp Web or Desktop
- Open web.whatsapp.com or the WhatsApp desktop app and link your regular WhatsApp account by scanning the QR code.
- Click the New chat icon → New community (or the Communities icon in the left sidebar on some versions).
- Add name, description and icon → click the arrow.
- Add existing groups or create new ones → click the tick to create.
Connect your WhatsApp Business number to the community
- From the owner account, open each linked group → Add member → add your WhatsApp Business number.
- Open group info → tap the Business number → Make group admin. It can now answer queries and share catalogue links.
- If you want the Business number to post community-wide announcements, try promoting it to community admin from Community info → members. If your app version doesn’t offer that for a Business account, keep announcements on the owner account.
- Add your Business short link (wa.me/…) or catalogue link to the community description so members can reach the sales chat in one tap.
Note: WhatsApp's menus change often – this guide was re-checked on 30 Sep 2026.
How to Add, Remove and Manage Groups in Your Community
Convert an existing WhatsApp group into a community group
Open the community → Manage groups (or Community info → Groups) → Add existing groups → select the groups → confirm. You must be an admin of each group. A group can belong to only one community at a time. Existing members are not removed; they simply see the group inside your community.
Create a new topic group inside the community
Community → Add group → Create new group → name it, add an icon, choose whether it’s visible to all community members or needs approval → create. Keep names action-oriented: “🛍️ New Arrivals”, “💬 Order Help”, “⭐ VIP Club”.
Control who can add groups and members
By default, members may be able to suggest or add groups. In Community settings, set “Who can add groups” to Only community admins. This keeps random groups out of your brand space.
Remove a group or a member
Remove a group: Community → Manage groups → tap the group → Remove. The group keeps working as a normal group outside the community. Remove a member: open the Announcements group → member list → tap the person → Remove from community. Removing someone from the community removes them from its announcements and linked groups.
Add co-admins
Community info → view members → tap a member → Make community admin. Admins can send announcements, add groups and remove members. Everyone can see who the admins are.
How to Invite Customers to Your WhatsApp Community
Share the community invite link
Community info → Invite members → Invite via link → copy, share or show as QR code. People who join through the link land in the Announcements group and can then join the topic groups you have made visible. You can reset the link at any time if it leaks into spam groups.
Use a QR code at your counter, on packaging and on invoices
Print the QR code on standees at billing counters, inside delivery boxes, on GST invoices and on visiting cards. Add one line of benefit: “Scan to get first access to Diwali offers”. This builds a consent-based list, which matters under the DPDP Act (see the compliance section).
Promote through Instagram, Google Business Profile and ads
- Add the invite link to your Instagram bio and story highlights.
- Post it as an update on your Google Business Profile.
- Run Click-to-WhatsApp ads that open your Business chat, then share the community link there after the customer asks to join.
- Mention it in your WhatsApp Business introduction message and your WhatsApp Business description.
Can you add customers without saving their numbers?
Adding people directly requires their number, and their privacy setting (“Who can add me to groups”) may block you. The invite link is the better route: customers choose to join, you don’t need to save anyone, and you have a clear record of opt-in.

How to Measure Your WhatsApp Community's Success
Knowing how to create community in WhatsApp Business is only half the job; growth comes from tracking it. Communities have no analytics dashboard, so track these by hand in a simple sheet once a week.
| KPI | How to measure | Healthy sign |
|---|---|---|
| Member growth | Admins see the total count in Announcements | Steady weekly joins after each promotion |
| Leave rate | Members lost ÷ members at start of week | Under 2% a week |
| Announcement engagement | Reactions + replies ÷ members | Rising over time; replies show interest |
| Active groups | Groups with a message in the last 7 days | Most groups active; merge the rest |
| Clicks to buy | Use a unique link or UTM on your website/catalogue | Clicks after each offer post |
| Community sales | Members-only coupon code (e.g. COMMUNITY10) | Coupon orders growing month on month |
| Response time | Time to answer questions in groups | Under 2 hours in business hours |
Privacy, Consent and WhatsApp Rules for Communities in India
DPDP Act 2023 and DPDP Rules 2025
India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act treats phone numbers as personal data. Collect numbers only with clear consent, say what you will send, and make leaving easy. An invite link or QR code that customers choose to scan is the cleanest way to show consent. Don’t upload customer lists to third-party “community extractor” or scraping tools; they can breach both the law and WhatsApp’s terms.
WhatsApp's own policies
Communities fall under WhatsApp’s Terms of Service, and business use is also covered by the WhatsApp Business and Commerce policies. Selling prohibited items, spamming or adding people who didn’t ask can get groups reported, the community removed or your number banned. WhatsApp can ban members or admins and disband a community involved in illegal or harmful activity.
What members can see
Members can see the phone numbers of people in the groups they share with them, and everyone can see who the admins are. Tell members this in the description, keep sensitive conversations (health, payments, addresses) in private chats, and don’t create groups that expose customer numbers to each other unless they agreed to it.
Extra care for regulated sectors
Clinics should avoid treatment claims and never discuss patient cases in groups. Financial advisers should include their SEBI/AMFI registration and avoid return guarantees. Real estate promoters should show their RERA number.
Troubleshooting: WhatsApp Community Problems and Fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| "New community" option not showing | You're in the WhatsApp Business app | Use standard WhatsApp or WhatsApp Web on a separate number |
| Option missing in standard WhatsApp too | Old app version or menu moved | Update the app; check New chat, ⋮ menu and the Communities tab |
| Can't add an existing group | You aren't admin of that group, or it's already in another community | Ask the group admin to make you admin, or remove it from the other community first |
| Can't add more members | Community has reached 2,000 | Remove inactive members or start a second community |
| Can't turn off replies to announcements | Not possible by design | Moderate by deleting unwanted replies; pin rules |
| Customer can't be added directly | Their privacy setting blocks group adds | Send them the invite link instead |
| Business number can't be made community admin | Feature limits for Business accounts on some versions | Keep announcements on the owner account; make the Business number a group admin |
| Invite link shared in spam groups | Link leaked | Community info → Invite via link → Reset link |
| Community disappeared | An admin deactivated it, or it was reported | Groups remain as normal groups; recreate and re-link them |
How to Leave, Deactivate or Rebuild a WhatsApp Community
Leave a community (members)
Community info → Exit community. You can’t leave only the Announcements group; exiting it means exiting the community. You can instead leave individual topic groups and stay in Announcements.
Deactivate (delete) a community (admins)
Community info → Deactivate community → confirm. Members are removed from the community and its Announcements group, but the linked groups continue as normal WhatsApp groups. This can’t be undone.
Rebuild with a new structure
If your first structure didn’t work, deactivate, create a fresh community and re-link the groups you want to keep. Post a short note in each group first so members aren’t surprised.
WhatsApp Community Myths vs Facts

How do I create a WhatsApp community for my business, then?

Up to 2,000 members, counting the Announcements group and all linked groups, according to WhatsApp’s Help Center. Each linked group can hold up to 1,024 members.
How many groups can I add to a WhatsApp community?
You can link up to 100 groups to one community, in addition to the Announcements group that WhatsApp creates automatically.
What is the difference between a WhatsApp community and a group?

Can community members send messages in the Announcements group?
Only admins can post announcements and start polls there. Members can react and reply to announcements, and admins can delete or report replies, but replies can’t be switched off.
Can members see my phone number in a WhatsApp community?
Everyone can see who the admins are. Members see the numbers of people in the groups they share. Only admins can see the total member count of the Announcements group.

No. A number can be registered on either WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business at one time. Use a second SIM or eSIM for the standard WhatsApp account that owns the community.
Why is the New community option not showing?
The most common reason is that you are in the WhatsApp Business app, which doesn’t support creating communities. In standard WhatsApp, update the app and check the New chat button, the ⋮ menu or the Communities tab.

Open the community → Manage groups → Add existing groups → select the group. You must be an admin of that group, and a group can belong to only one community.

Can I create a WhatsApp community on a laptop?
Yes. Use WhatsApp Web or the WhatsApp desktop app linked to a standard WhatsApp account, then click New chat → New community (or the Communities icon on some versions).
Can the WhatsApp Business API create communities?
No. The Business Platform (API) is built for opted-in, one-to-one messaging such as order updates and campaigns. Communities are a feature of the WhatsApp apps.
Is it legal to add customers to a WhatsApp community in India?
